the setlist - 015 - SOTY

SOTY - Friday the 13th

Recently, I was asked to share life advice for someone in high school. I maybe spent excessive time in my own thoughts looking back at the things that have shaped me and then honing in on the aspects that have made me a better person. Iโ€™m not going to post all of it right now, but it fits into a set of Story of the Year photos that I had been holding in order to share when their latest album was released.

One piece of my advice wasโ€” โ€œSay yes to adventures and it is highly likely you will find joy in the things that you love now, later in life. Itโ€™s crazy when I look at my life at 39, and what I like is not much different than what I liked at 16. I love taking photos, going to concerts, all things space, rollerblading, backpacking, and listening to the same heavy music I listened to in high school. As an adult, it can be difficult to find others that enjoy the same things, but I think we often get stuck trying to reflect the persona that society says we should be. Donโ€™t live vicariously through others. Find ways to make that you.

Always be authentic to yourself, show kindness to everyone, and never be afraid to do things solo. Be someone that youโ€™re proud of and take time to enjoy what you love doing as it will bring joy to your life.โ€

This brings me to Story of the Year. A band that I discovered in 2003 from their platinum certified โ€œPage Avenueโ€ album. Iโ€™ve continued to listen to them as well as many other bands for the past 20 years, always looking forward to latest releases and constantly found wearing the latest merch. It is so common to hear, โ€œwow, I havenโ€™t listened to them since high schoolโ€โ€ฆ Why not!? So many of these bands are releasing fire albums. I do think that we should also continually find new artists and support up and coming bands. However, bands like Story of the Year pour their hearts into music, relying on it for their livelihoods. The time spent creating, recording, practicing, touring, and promoting their art is an extremely expensive investment. As weโ€™ve grown older, the trade-offs increase such as time with our families or missing kids activities to play a show in a random town across the country. The art created by the musicians must have purpose, must have meaning, and must be worth sharing with the world.

Some of the most recent music released from artists including Story of the Year, Thursday, Armor for Sleep, Emery, Underoath, Thrice, and Hayley Williams to name a few, has so much depth, authenticity, and intention that the culmination of these elements combines into powerful albums that need to be heard.

Take time this year to support music. Check out the artists that carried you through your high school years, stream their latest releases, buy their merch, and go to that show. Feel alive. Let the artist breath life into their listeners.

Story of the Year - A.R.S.O.N album release

Story of the Year released their newest album today, โ€œA.R.S.O.N.โ€ - All Rage Still Only Numb. The album ignites with their opening track Gasoline.

Gasoline does not disappoint; a heavy, full throttle, unapologetic opener setting the theme for the album - โ€œmake a nightmare into a dream, cover it all in gasolineโ€. The album carries into โ€œDisconnectedโ€ with a strong, catchy chorus and repeats - โ€œHow am I gonna clear the wreckageโ€ carrying the theme of destruction and loss. When listening to the album, the songs align with the album title, taking us from rage, discontent, questioning, introspection, moments of hope, and closing the album with numbness and grief.

Vocalist Dan Marsala brings us with him on an emotional ride, while delivering some of their heaviest songs, full choruses, and catchy screams. Each song is individually unique and fresh, offering the listener a rich experience with a no-skip album. Story of the Year has delivered an album to be proud of.

Like the album, the band opened their recent co-headlining tour with Senses Fail and Armor For Sleep with their opening track, โ€œGasolineโ€.

I was able to capture moments from their โ€œScream Teamโ€ tour stop at Bogarts in Cincinnati, OH.

Having seen Story of the Year multiple times through the years, this was my favorite performance as they all were at their best. They had so much energy with both guitarist Ryan Phillips and bassist Adam Russell constantly launching through the air with jumps. Josh Wills crushing it on drums and Danโ€™s intense energy and crowd engagement delivered a show that you cannot wait to experience again.

โ€œInto the dark, I can't believe what I'm seeing, A billion lights all bleeding, I'm trying to find a new meaning.โ€

Something else beyond the music that I look forward to is the photography that Ryan Phillips captures and posts on Instagram in each city. He has a special way of capturing positive moments, sharing behind the scenes, providing advice, or posting meaningful personal stories. The combination of the artistic photos and the storytelling narrative is very well done and I definitely recommend giving him a follow.

Congrats to the band on the new album and thank you for continuing to create art that resonates with us.
